PhD Colloquium & Paper Producing Workshop

The 2nd International Conference on Business and Management (ICBM), 2019 saw the introduction of the PhD Colloquium & Paper Producing workshop for the conference participants which took place on the 25th of April at The Westin, Dhaka.

The speakers for the workshop were Prof. Dr. Tzong-Ru Lee from the Department of Marketing, National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Md. Mamun Habib from Brac Business School, Brac University. This session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Mohammad Mahboob Rahman, Dean of Brac Business School, Brac University.

While assessing the paper submissions for ICBM 2019, the conference secretariat noticed that participants were unable to produce good quality papers that match international standards. The PhD Colloquium and Paper Producing workshop was arranged to ensure the submission of good quality papers in the future and to help the participants understand what mistakes they often make that degrades the paper’s quality.

The event kicked off at 9:30 AM as the speakers and session chairs took their seats. Dr Mahboob then went on to state that the workshop was an initiative that would proof to be quite beneficial to the students who are involved in research and who plan on getting started for their doctoral. He then gave the floor to the speakers and the main session was underway.

At the very beginning of the session, Dr. Lee pointed out that when it comes to research, especially for a PhD, the research topic must be of an intriguing kind, a hot topic that will peak the interest of academicians everywhere. To this, Dr. Mamun added that our research must be able to bring benefit to the society in some form. Dr. Mamun also emphasised on the role a supervisor plays when it comes to getting your PhD. From the submission of the proposal to the final paper, one must co-ordinate with their respective supervisor.

The speakers then went on to present a comprehensive approach towards academic research which included selecting a topic as the main focus of research, suggesting different sites and journals for exploring papers related to the topic, where and how to submit a research paper, and a full on dissection of a well-structured research paper.

The entire workshop was comprised of 4 modules namely research-based ideas, research-publications, outlines of research publications and academic writing. These modules were presented in two sessions with a tea break in between.

After the speakers had finished taking questions from the audience at the end of the second session, the workshop came to a close and all the guests and participants were provided with lunch.

The workshop saw the participation of academicians from Bangladesh, India, Malaysia and Sweden. The research interests of these participants included advertising, consumer behaviour, micro finance in rich, developed countries, labour law, industrial law, supply change, health management and so on.
